I like to think of my occupation (that which occupies my time, so my job as well as my degree) not as work, but as Purpose. I am on my way towards my purpose now. A brilliant career awaits me, and whatever hell the next seven years throws at me, the career I’ll have at the end of it will be worth this nightmare.

I’ve been listening to a lot of Led Zeppelin, The Who, Daft Punk, Roysksopp, Amiina, Periphery and Kaki King. I’ve moved house this week, over night for three separate nights. During this time I had an exam, my first assessment due and a friend in town who is a higher priority than sleep, it seems.

There’s one thing I’m sure about at least; now that I’ve made it through this fortnight – I know can make it through anything. Proactive beats the hell out of reactive any day.

The Future (Again)

I have been accepted. I am going to enter into an undergraduate degree next year. And the following two years, at least. Hopefully then I will have the opportunity to take on an honours year, and then gain entry into a masters program.

During that time I will be broke. I won’t have any money, and I will struggle a lot. I don’t have anything worthwhile to do instead though, and the pay off will be worth it.

I have a good network of people in Melbourne willing and very able to have fun without spending too much money. This is essential, and I’m lucky to have them.

And I love who I’m living with. I have a creative project in the works with my flatmate, which my other flatmate is totally jealous of. (Just kidding MK. I just wrote so you’d feel weird about people knowing your bizness on the Internet. And because you said you’re jealous.) and I also look forward to some day living with Jason on the south side of Melbourne.

I like my job, and I miss my friends from home. Especially Alice and Ian. I wish they could move here. I cannot wait until Meg moves here.

Home Alone on a Friday Night

A lot of the time I don’t feel like I’m a writer. I hardly ever write, and when I do it’s almost always to absolutely no end other than to appease my mind, to quiet my brains thoughts when I’m trying to get some shut-eye.

Then again, I do think that a writer is a thought transcriber and a thought organiser (or editor, I guess.) So maybe I am a writer.

When something happens I’m generally trying my best to think of the best medium through which to record the moment, and hurriedly trying to visualize paragraphs, making deals with myself to fruitlessly guarantee that I won’t forget some beautiful line of words that I felt summed up a moment poignantly and perfectly – an effort which I’ll admit usually ends up being entirely in vain.

When I think about whether I’m a writer I usually end up conceding that I’m just another fan of pretty paper artifacts and stringing big words together. Perhaps that’s all a writer is anyway.

I do want to be published, but only for the glory of it. Not because I actually think that anything I write is any good. The vast majority of my work are first drafts or convoluted idea blurbs or worse – confessional mind dumps.

And most, if not all of it is half finished.

I used to think I was a waif. There was a time when my home was so hard to define that the only tribe I could possibly call my own would be a tribe so nomadic, so diasporic that to call it anything immediately cancelled itself out.

I just looked up the meaning of the word diasporic to make sure that I wasn’t misspelling it and as it turns out the word is of Greek origin, once to have been used only in reference to the exile of the Jewish people from Israel. As it turns out, the two (Greek and Jewish) have joined together to create one of my favourite words is the world, a word that once changed the way I looked at myself all those years ago, a word that has worked well to define me for a very long time, but I digress.

I thought I had it settled, that the definition of my tribe would have to come from a mixture of several different tribes. Upon careful consideration though – on todays 25-minute tram ride – I decided that I truly feel like I’m a New South Welshwoman. Every part of that state feels like home to me, from the city to the outback. Queensland never did, not ever. And I dare-say Victoria’s going to be working for at least the next 25 years to take the majority rule over this heart of mine. New South Wales is the best damn place in the entire world in my opinion. If we’re being honest I’d actually rather live in Melbourne though, for the weather and culture and such, but New South Wales is a home to me like none other. And now that I’ve found my base I feel like I can move out from that base and seek out some kind of new home. A new settlement.

Further to this New South Wales base, my opinion is that my tribe is presently a displacement. A collection of us who’ve been born into situations which we’ve found entirely unsuitable for our own lives and who have henceforth left in search of new ones. Thankfully a few of us, like-minded as we are have met along the way. We know that home isn’t the house that we live in, or the people we spend time with – it’s the life that we create together. Home is the big picture. Home is the dream becoming the reality, it’s meeting for coffee at a cafe where you can order The Usual, or spending time with your parents over a long weekend, home is sharing an umbrella with someone you love. Home is the love you have for family, by blood or by choice.

My tribe will always start with these two New South Welshwomen who moved away to conquer dreams, then found their way to Queensland, then followed their hearts to Victoria …oh, and men (and women) who help to build our lives with us. You can be in the tribe too. Where would we be without you? Very bored, probably. And no doubt missing you terribly.

I am in love.
You’ll find me wearing these post apocalypse. I’ll be one of those renegade women fighting for her life in the ruins of the city, rummaging through rich apartment blocks swiping morsels of old cafeteria stores for the children I’m keeping alive underground.

I’ll stumble across these one day in an abandoned office block as they hanging from the limp feet of an 80s-revival fashionista. I’ll take them; I’ll ware them, and somehow I’ll find a way to bring peace to the people parched by years of famine. Somehow… I’ll end that war.

Four years and I still remember

Four years and I still remember well the salt in your hair, the sticky sea smell like straw, all curls and scrunched. Long like Jolie and black it stuck to me while you slept. I’d twirl bunches of the stuff and stare long into our white winter ceiling. Heater on high I rolled over while you snored, I drew breaths from your world I wanted nothing but your dark brown eyes sleepy staring into mine. I wanted nothing but your smell but I found myself, everytime you woke, with a big white ceiling, a dusty smell, and the same old living hell.
